This past Saturday we held our first-ever Sour Cherry Comics writer’s workshop and it was awesome! There were seven of us total, and Silver Sprocket let us use their space for a couple hours and even gave us a table and some chairs in the back. I am super grateful to the Silver Sprocket crew for giving us that space for this magical time!
Next writer's workshop: This Saturday, Nov. 13, 2:30 PM meet at Milk SF for coffee and a little bit of timed writing with optional prompts. Weather permitting we could take it to Dolores Park if the cafe is too crowded.
Here’s what we did:
- Introductions: Name, age (if we wanted to), favorite genre to read and to write. People also shared where they lived and a little bit about themselves or what they did for work. We also shared our astrological signs (thanks to Veronica for the fun suggestion!)
- 10-min timed prompted warm-up: We set the timer and wrote something around the prompt “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” and then we shared our writings from this prompt. There were some awesome responses and creative pieces that came from this prompt!
- 35~min timed writing (with optional prompt): I think we all got the creative juices really going with this one and it seemed like everyone was able to use the time to focus and really get some stuff done. For me, I can say I used the time to put characters from my current novel into a new situation (using the optional prompt, “Things I wish I said”) and for some others, there was prose, more fleshed out business plans/ideas, zine creations, comics and illustrations for friends…
- Reading: Those who wanted to shared what they had written during this time and I was truly blown away. Hearing everyone read what they wrote was truly a magical time.
- Closing notes: We talked a little bit about where and when we might be able to meet up next time and I asked if people were interested in joining me in a podcast about writing and comics. (Oh yeah- that’s a thing. More on that later.)
Shop Updates:
The online store is open! (There’s also a link at the top right of this website.) I’ve also: acquired the business license for the store, applied for the fictitious business name (had it sent back to me for being incorrect and then re-sent it) and applied for a seller’s permit with the CA board of equalization.
So far all that’s in the online store is beanie babies, but I’ll be making my way to the art supplies store to make some fun stuff to sell so, keep your eyes out for Sour Cherry merch in the near future.
Podcast?!
You read that right. I know everyone and their brother has a podcast these days, but it was suggested to me to try to make something like this happen, so, okay! I’m gonna go for it. It’s probably going to take some time to figure out but… maybe that’ll be something. Some cool people who were at the writer’s workshop last weekend might join. Expect it to be about our favorite books and comics, and writing, illustrating or making zines.
More Reviews
I gobbled up the next few trades of Saga and Paper Girls, plus I’ve added a new fiction novel to my reading list and a VERY interesting manga novel I picked up from Mission Comics (thanks Leef, for the recommendation!) I look forward to finishing all these and putting up some more reviews in the next post.
