GUESS WHAT? We have a STORE, people! A real, physical brick-and-mortar shopfront! So that’s the great news for today. All next week I will be working on building it out – getting tables, bookshelves, increasing my inventory, reaching out to local artists and so on and so forth. If you’re a SF or bay-area based artist, please email me: sourcherrycomics@gmail.com if you’d like your work featured in my store and let’s chat!
The store is located at 3187 16th St, on the corner of 16th St. and Guerrero (you may know the restaurants Lers Ros Thai and Pakwan which are next door and across the street) – and I couldn’t be more pleased with the space! I am looking forward to getting everything together for a soft opening towards the end of February. The official grand opening party will be on Free Comic Book Day weekend – May 7th & 8th. Keep your eye on this space as well as the Sour Cherry Comics instagram for updates on that.
February’s Silver Sprocket Writer’s Workshop is next weekend – Sunday, February 6th from 7-9pm. 1018 Valencia St. Mark your calendars and get your notebooks ready! I will likely continue our workshops at Silver Sprocket the first Sunday of the month for the next couple months at least, maybe longer.
Here’s what I’ve been reading lately:
American Cult
This is a graphic novel anthology from Silver Sprocket that goes over (in chronological order) all of the major religious cults that have started in the United States. I really loved reading this and learned a lot about some of these cults which I have only really heard bits and pieces of. I have never been a big “true crime” or cult aficionado so a lot of this was pretty new to me. It is really interesting and if you’re like me and don’t know much about this stuff, it’s a pretty good introduction to learning about all these cults.
Tell Me How To Be – Neel Patel
Wow this book is really incredible. I am not quite finished yet, but I have been reading it at a very fast pace (faster than usual!) because it is SO well-written and SO compelling. This is a really gripping novel from the perspective of an gay Indian man and his mother (takes turns switching POV) and the secrets they both hold; how they cope and the ways it affects their lives. Really recommend picking this one up. I have been addicted to the pages of this book.
The Banks – Roxane Gay & Ming Doyle
OH BOY I sure love this series. I’m about halfway through (have read 3 of the 6 that come in this set) – I had debated about opening it because it comes all wrapped and shiny but I just adore Roxane Gay and I was becoming more and more curious about its contents so I caved when I got some more copies in shipment. This is a very exciting story of 3 generations of women and one wildly thrilling heist. It is Roxane Gay’s writing so of course the character depth, the dialogue and the pacing is superb and the art is equally fantastic. I am in love with this series and really excited to see where it goes.
That’s it for today’s update! The most exciting part of course is the shiny new storefront, and I hope to see lots of people stopping in when I open my doors to the public. More details to come as I build it out.
